What
to Do to Tune Up PC Systems
People tune up PC systems they’re using to take care of any
kinks or problems they encounter while using them. Doing some
fine-tuning helps PCs run better, eliminates error messages, and gets
rid of random lockups or freezes and system crashes. Those who tune up
PC systems find that doing so can significantly improve PC performance.
Tips to Tune Up Your PC
Before reinstalling Windows, start an operating system (OS) upgrade or
consider installing new program software. The tips mentioned here were
primarily developed for the Windows 9X OS family. Take a look at some
of them.
- Backup the registry, autoexec.bat, config.sys,
win.ini and system.ini prior to tuning up or tweaking the PC. It would
also help if you learned how to restore such files from DOS beforehand.
There are lots of third-party programs that do this task well.
- Whenever you tune up PC systems, disable the
screensavers or at least set them to an hour. If you utilize power
management, set the time-offs to two hours for the monitor and hard
drive. Standby does not always work properly on a lot of desktops. Note
that a power management or screensaver that kicks in during a file
download, software installation or CD burn can corrupt or kill that
particular process while you’re launching a program and while
that operation is underway.
- Booting to safe mode and removing all duplicate
hardware items and devices in the Device Manager also helps improve PC
performance. Here’s what you do: double-click on every
device>click on each duplicate and hit
“Remove.” It would be best to have your CDs,
floppies and drivers handy, in case you might need them later.
Run Defrag and
Scandisk in Safe Mode ONLY if you’re experiencing problems
launching them normally. These utilities are extremely important and
ought to be run on a regular basis. Run scandisk at least once weekly
and Defrag once monthly to improve PC performance.
- See to it that there’s always a
minimum of around 300MB free on your PC’s C:\ drive. Go to
the Add/Remove Programs screen and uninstall the software programs
you’re not using. If space is still too tight, place the swap
file on another PC partition or hard drive. Make sure that
there’s less than 225 files (this includes folders) in the
PC’s root directory C:
Inadequate RAM
makes it near-impossible to have a faster PC owing to heavy usage of
the swap file. This usually results in system errors and computer
crashes. Sufficient memory contributes to faster PC functioning.
It’s important to tune up PC systems as such an activity
lengthens the lifespan of computers. Regular PC tune-ups
improve PC performance and result in faster PC systems!
