Have to sort each subfolder 1 at a time. I have 10. Plus sub-subfolders. Ouch! The pain of time spent on something that should have been fixed long ago… Sigh…

Doesn’t work. Period. Will not sort subfolders…

I’m afraid I am still unable to sort my bookmark following the instruction given, ie 1. click Organise bookmarks. 2. on the now open bookmarks sidebar – right click bookmarks menu and then click “sort by name”. After doing all this, still the bookmarks are not sorted. I am using firefox the latest version

Thanks a bunch. I have collected many bookmarks and was having problems location them. Now alphabetically speaking it will be easy.

    Thanks !
    It was annoying knowing not.

  9. In response to abNORMal, my bookmarks re-sorted in the right pane but took a while (about 10 seconds) as I have a long list of bookmarks in Firefox.

@TheColdFusion – FireFox 3 indeed is a lot slower with regards to bookmarks than earlier versions. Actually that problem was introduced in version 2 already.
To my knowledge there is no way to speed it up, we’ll have to wait until it is addressed in the program itself.

You can try a bookmark export, reinstall FireFox 3 and import the bookmarks, but I would not expect it to help…

Yes, I’m familiar with this as the only way to sort ‘Bookmarks Menu’ items. But it takes a very very long time on a long list. Any way to optimize it? Earlier version (1,2) did not have this problem.

@Firefox user – The sorting has its benefits, but can have drawback as you point out. I’d suggest to always properly (re)name your bookmarks, as it can save a lot of time.

Since you mention brain-retraining, have a look at the article about the Vista Start menu. That tool is really all about visual memory, so you might like it.

..hmm – a slight wrinkle is that I know roughly when I bookmarked something (and thus its original place in the list), but not what it’s name is – so now some things are harder to find….unless I actually rename the link to something sensible when bookmarking. And you can’t undo this sort. (shows up as “unsorted” in the Organize Bookmarks menu)
Time for brain-retraining. But better in the long run, I’m sure.

I just tried the (too) obvious:
Selected Bookmarks from the menubar, right clicked on a folder and selected “Sort by Name” from the context menu.

The added benefit is that it sorts by name and leaves further sub folders (sub-sub folders) at the top of the list, like Windows usually does. Sorting by name under “Organize Bookmarks” mixed the folders in with the other links.

You still have to do it folder by folder though. Not too bad, except for bookmark packrats like me.

I’m using FF v.3.0.5, so maybe that’s standard by now.

@abNORMal – The screenshot was indeed after the sorting. I replaced it by a more appropriate one.
    Thx.

Thanks. This works, but it doesn’t show in the right pane when you do it. You finish this task then go look at your bookmarks in Bookmarks, THEN you see a sorted list. I kept thinking it wasn’t working, at first.
