@Paul – I would actually suggest you use the Asus drivers, since that will make sure all hardware is properly supported and ends up as devices in the device manager.

In any case, the device should really be present in the device manager. Have you checked the “Sound, video and game controllers” groups for something like “Asus Virtual Video Capture Device”?

@Kyle – Firstly thanks for the swift reply, appreciated.Tried device manager as you suggest but there is no mention of another webcam other than the Lifecam.Any other suggestions on what/where this may be?
The video card itself is made by Asus,so i’m assuming its part of the driver install package somehow.Even though I used the latest drivers from Nvidia & not from the disc.
    TIA.

@Paul – Considering that you see 2 webcam devices now, I would first suggest you open the Device Manager and disable the new Asus GSB webcam device. That should automatically make the Microsoft Lifecam VX5000 the default recording device (again).

  4. Kyle says:

@Ajk – Not sure, as it really depends on the software that comes with it. If you are using XP, you can use Microsoft’s Timershot powertoy.
On Vista or XP you will need something else, maybe WheresJames Webcam Publisher works.

Hi I have a Microsoft Lifecam VX5000 that was working perfect.I upgraded my video card from a Nvidia GT240 to an Nvidia GTX550TI.Now on a flash based site where it worked perfectly,it works for 1 part of the sites flashplayer chat but not the other part.It also now gives me a 2nd choice of an Asus GSB webcam which i’m assuming is the cause of my woes.
    TIA for any help.

Does the HD-5000 web cam has a a timer to take pictures ??

@C.Russ – I am assuming that you are using a webcam program that came with the Acer Aspire One? Have you tried using a different program to capture photos and videos with your webcam? SplitCam is an option, or even Debut Video Capture.

  8. C.Russ says:

So I have acer aspire one with a built in cam and it will work for skype but it won’t let me take pictures or videos. It keeps saying camera no found. I tried using the download from cnet then a different one but neither worked. What do I do?

  9. Kyle says:

@ricardo – Sometimes the sequence of installation can make a difference. So installing Skype might have affected your webcam setup. Simply try reinstalling the webcam driver for your hp dv9827cl and see if that brings it back.
In this case, I think you need to reinstall the cyberlink youcam software.
Also have a look at how to
    enable cyberlink youcam in skype.

If not, you should use a restore point to bring back the configuration/setup from before you installed skype. That should also bring your webcam device back. And then check for compatibility issues between the skype version you downloaded and the webcam/notebook. There are cases when older versions of skype work, and newer ones don’t.

kyle, I have a hp dv9827cl notebook with integrated webcam,

after i downloaded skype the camera disappeared from imaging devices, and the message unknown device started to show when i started the laptop, usb composite device says unknown device
what is your take on this problem

  11. Kyle says:

@loraine – If you do not see any webcam device in the device manager, that means the device is not recognized properly. It could be it is showing in the device manager as a unknown device.
The best first step is to simply install the right driver for your webcam and Windows version. If there is a problem with the webcam hardware, the driver installer should report an error. If not, you should see the webcam device in the device manager after installing the driver.
If you let me know the Windows version and the details of the webcam (brand and model, or brand and model of the laptop in case it is an integrated webcam), I can help you get the right driver.

i dont see the camera icon on my device manager . how can i look for this?

  13. Kyle says:

@paola – If you are having problems with your webcam online, and the webcam works locally, then it is mostly an issue with the flash plugin. Try downloading and reinstalling the flash player, and check the settings to allow the webcam to be accessed by the site that you are opening.

  14. paola says:

well the voice works but you cant see nothing i change the britnees and the settings but you still cnt seee nothing i went to youtube and clicked on the camera but nothing showed up ?

  15. Kyle says:

@douglas hardy – That is not a very common problem as far as I have seen. Seems to happen on some linux based systems, but I have not seen it on a Windows based computer.
The first thing I’d suggest is to check the power management option on your USB Root Hub devices in the Device Manager. In the Power Management tab disable the option for the computer to turn of the device.
If that does not help, it is possibly a software related issue.

dear sir i read you guide but i still cant rememdy the fact that every time i switch web cam on it work fro 10- 15 seconds before blanking out to black screen each time i do a connection test it says no problem. I am on xp proffessional

  17. Kyle says:

@kanan – If the webcam recently worked, it generally means that a change took place in the system configuration.
    Check if you:
    – installed any updates of Skype,
    – installed any updates of the webcam drivers,
    – installed Windows updates (typically happen on Tuesdays)

If so, one of these changes could be responsible for your problems with the webcam.
Assuming you are using restore points (which Windows would unless you disabled it), try doing a System Restore to a date of a week ago or somewhere around the time things stopped working. Just type “system restore” in the search box of the Start menu.

hi,i am using a netbook which has a built in webcam.i use skype for vedio calling. i could use the webcam even a few days ago. but now skype says that it could not find any webcam. so i can’t do vedio call any longer. what to do?

  19. Kyle says:

@Rachelle – It is possible that one of the laptop’s standard utilities is not working properly.
It can indeed be related to the webcam, but most likely a cause rather than a result of your efforts to get the webcam to work.
Try downloading and installing the Sony Notebook Utilities for your laptop. It includes the VAIO Camera Capture utility.

  20. Rachelle says:

I’m also getting a new dialogue box that pops up randomly. It’s says “Vaio event service (service module) stopped working and was closed” Would this have anything to do with the camera issues I’ve been having? Or could this have been caused by what I’ve been doing while trying to fix the camera problems? What do I do?

  21. Rachelle says:

Ok I downloaded splitcam…but I get no picture. And when I open skype and try to use it I still get the same message that says “can’t start video. try closing other programs that might be using your webcam.” If I try using Windows live messenger I get this message “we cannot connect to your webcam. your webcam may be in use by another program. please check it and try again.”

Since I cannot get a picture on splitcam (just a black screen) and I’m still getting those other error messages I’m guessing this webcam is just toast. Would that be a correct assumption?

  22. Kyle says:

@Nour – If the webcam normally takes clear pictures, you can assume that the hardware and drivers are working properly. If it is just the messengers where you have problems, the issue is more likely related to the Internet bandwidth. Try using a single messenger, with no other applications running that access the Internet on your computer. So close your browser, your email program, and anything else that might (regularly) access the Internet.
That way you can maximize the bandwidth available for video chatting.
Of course also make sure the lighting on your end is good. Webcams have a small lens and as a result are sensitive to low light conditions.

  23. Nour says:

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop with built in webcam. Usually it’s worked fine. It takes clear pics and video but when using Messengers, it looks to people like I’m “in a fog”. I’ve cleaned it, drivers are installed, says it’s working properly. What can I do?

  24. Kyle says:

@Rachelle – If the webcam driver is installed and there is no error in the Device Manager, try using SplitCam to access the webcam. That should never give the “in use” type of error.

  25. Rachelle says:

Ok I tried that but it still isn’t working. I didn’t see a way to run the webcam utility either. I have webcam viewer 1.0 and I tried that but I still get the same message about it being used by another program.
