Do we throw away our old printers when we can no longer use them with a new operating system? Replace them with a compatible printer with active support? If the old printer is working fine, then preferably not of course. Even if no driver for Vista is available, we can tell Vista to install it anyway and hope everything works!
Adding hardware to your computer will normally result in Windows XP automatically detecting your new device and installing the required drivers for it to work. If your hardware is not automatically detected by Windows XP, it could be that it is not Plug and Play compatible. In that case you need to manually install the new hardware using the Add Hardware Wizard in the Control Panel.
When trying to analyze hardware or device problems, you might not be able to see the removable devices in the Windows XP device manager. It is possible to tweak Windows XP to change this behavior, and see all hardware devices in the device manager.
