The File Extension Library

What is a file extension?

Short answer: it's the set of letters after the period (.) in the name of a file.

Long answer: File extensions signify the file format of a file. It tells the operating system (OS) how data was stored in the file. Not all OS, require a file extension though. For instance, this is optional in Unix, but is mandatory with MS-DOS and Windows systems.

In most file formats the file type is actually defined by the contents (first bytes, file structure), but extensions are used to define the application that is used for opening the file.

Z03 - Extension Details
Date Added: March 12, 2008
File Extension:  .Z03
Description 1: .Z03 is the third of a WinZipcreated split archive. WinZip refers to a known file compression tool. The same compression used in standard .ZIP files is used for .Z03 files. However, in the case of a Z03 file, it forms part of a files collection making up one archive. Since a .Z03 file is part 3 of a split archive, it has to be decompressed with both the .Z01 and .Z02 files. In some cases, there is a fourth file, the .Z04 file, plus additional files making up the split archive.
