How to use the MAXIFS function in Excel 2019
The MAXIFS function in Microsoft Excel is a powerful and useful function. It allows you to find a maximum value in a range of cells based on a specified condition.
To use the MAXIFS function:
- Select the cell for the function result.
- Type “=MAXIFS(“
- Now use the mouse to select the range of values from which to get the maximum value.
- Next, type a comma (“,”).
- Then select the range of cells containing the criteria values.
- Next, type a comma again (“,“).
- And finally enter the criteria value to use for selecting the maximum value, followed by pressing Enter.

Note: In this example the resulting value will be 100, as that is the highest value in the Amount column with the Name John next to it.
The MAXIFS function can only be used for numeric values. So, for example, it is not possible to use a date column instead of the Amount column.
If you need the lowest value instead of the highest value you can use MINIFS.
In case the function does not appear to be available in your Excel version, make sure you check the Office product information. The function is only available in the subscription versions, and not in the standalone versions!
