I have a Dell inspiron 1420 laptop with windows vista and intel core 2 duo inside. Whenever my contacts on msn send me a webcam invite, I accept it and all of a sudden everything freezes and 15 or so seconds later I’m automatically signed out. This keeps on going and going for almost a year now. It was working very well and now this freezing and signing out trouble is getting me mad!!!

Can you help me ASAP!!!! PLEASE!

@Sara – In the program that you use for your webcam, check the video input settings. For a webcam there should be an option to change the video capture properties, which includes settings for white balance.
I’ll add a screenshot to the main article for this.

@Nina – I have heard of this problem before, but I do not think it is related to recording or a hacker viewing your webcam. Those actions would take place on the recipients systems, so you would not even notice.
Try (re)installing the latest DirectX from Microsoft’s website, and you can also try if it happens in a different chat program like Skyp or MS Live.

@Dan – Have you installed Vista Service Pack 1? That is required as there were problems in Vista with webcams and USB that were solved in SP1.
Other things that can help are reinstalling DirectX (version 10 for Vista), reinstalling your video drivers (use the manufacturer’s driver, not the default Microsoft drivers).

@ray – Same thing, try reinstalling DirectX and your video driver.

@uzma – Try reinstalling DirectX. Older versions of Yahoo messenger use Video for Windows, not the newer DirectX, so maybe that is why Yahoo works.

    DirectX 9.0c download
    DirectX 10 download

When i try using the webcam using the program that came with it, it works perfectly fine but when i try to use it online with my friends using msn windows live messenger, or AIM, my screen gets all fuzzy and only the audio works…

Kyle… I have a problem with yahoo webcam. I usually chat with someone on yahoo messenger and we view each other on webcam. i am using my toshiba laptop and have a built-in webcam (wireless connection). Last time, while we were chatting and viewing our webcams, and after some minutes, it came that i view MYSELF in his webcam window instead of viewing HIM. in other words, i watched myself in my webcam and also in his webcam that he sent me. so, in both webcam windows (mine and him), i can view myself or watching myself at the same time. what is that?
is it a webcam yahoo problem?
OR, could it be that my partner is recording my webcam?
OR, could it be a third party, a hacker who is hijacking my webcam and is watching me?
I am waiting for your reply ASAP.
    thanks in advance.

it is specialy bad with this one person but i think we have same skype version. but there are others too. and always same ones. i will try to update them though =) thank you so much for your answers *hugs!!*

  11. Kyle says:

@jancy – Most webcams have a setting to compensate for low-light conditions. Implementation and quality will vary, that is probably why you see the differences.
In some cases the webcam has its own software to change the low-light settings, and in some cases you can change it in the program using the webcam. Our Asus laptop (running XP) does not hav a webcam program installed, but in SplitCam I can change the settings to adjust the webcam image. File menu, Video Config, Image tab.

@Lanjelin – In the case of broadband your network should not be a problem. Are you have these problems with the same people or do the problems sometimes happen with a person and not another time with the same person?
It can help if you and the other person in the chat use the same version of the messenger software. So at least try both updating to the latest version of Skype and Windows Live Messenger.

  12. Lanjelin says:

Hi again. im using broadband if that is what you mean. my english is not so good.
And nothing else is running. only skype.

  13. Kyle says:

@Lanjelin – If the webcam is working fine in some cases, and not in other, it might not be the webcam itself. What type of network connection are you using? Bandwidth could be a problem, especially in case of wireless connections.
Also check if you are running anything else, try running only the chat client and see if it still occurs.

    Hi Kyle,

I just bought an ASUS K40ij laptop. It’s built in webcam works just fine, but the only problem is that the image appears on it is more likely to be black and white. My friend who uses a different brand of laptop has a colored appearance on his webcam. Where both using it on the same room having the same room light.

His cam was clear (colored) while mine was black and white. But when i add more lights it turns colored. What do u think is the problem? Please help.

    Thanks,
    Jancy

And sometimes it works perfectly on both msn and skype. why is that? and how can i fix it? please help me sort it =)

  16. Kyle says:

@frank – Did you uninstall all software related to the logitech cam? Also uninstall the logitech drivers in the Device Manager (you might need to select Show unplugged devices in the View menu).
That might solve it, let me know if it helps.

    Hi Kyle,

Just a day before got a cam INTEX 305WC, 8MPand it has the plug and play mode, when i go to my computer i could see my camera connected with a cam icon. When i ope it
i could see the video but it is not clear the picture looks like a negative mixed
with yellow and floursent shade. More simple to say lot of HUE in it.

What could be the problem and remedy? how to check whether the camera is fine r my computer has a problem. Advice plz.

i had a logitech cam and the driver was installed for that. but intex is plug and play

  18. Kyle says:

@Keahi – You can check your webcam properties in the Device Manager and see if the driver has some setting regarding sharing. Some vendors also put this setting (if available) in the webcam software, like QuickCam if I recall.
Another option is to use a webcam sharing program like SplitCam or ManyCam. These programs act as a virtual webcam, sharing your webcam at the same time with different applications.

@robyn – Are you using the webcam mic? Any chance there is audio from the speakers going back into the mic? Try using a headset only and see if that works, so you can pinpoint the problem. Make sure to select the right audio input source in the program you are using.

    thank you

  21. Kyle says:

@Cedric Stanback – Do you mean you get a blue screen of death error when you try to access the webcam or do you mean the image shows blue instead of the webcam image?

  22. Kyle says:

@Dan – You might need to download and install the Dell Webcam Manager again.

  23. Cedric Stanback says:

Have a sony vaio webcam says no input and has a blue screen how do i fix that?

  24. Dan says:

I have a built in webcam on my dell inspiron. I recently had the hardrive replaced and now when I attempt to access my webcam via the start button or the search feature (or at all) only the “webcam console” (i.e. the menu that controls the settings on the webcam) comes up and not the webcam itself.

  25. Kyle says:

@Kevin G – My first question would be if you have tried other programs? If it happens only with Skype, you could try reinstalling the latest version of Skype. If other (chat) programs also have the same problem with your webcam, it is indeed more likely a webcam problem.
