Hey i have an acer crystal eye webcam. I can open it fine and when its open its great quality. Also on most websites the quality is GREAT. However on msn the quality is terrible. I know it is never as good but it is very pixelated (also like this on testmywebcam.com) this is recent as using it on msn has never been a problem before. thanks for help

@Megan – If it worked in the past, the best thing to try is to use a System Restore point to bring back a configuration where it did work. You can also try reinstalling the webcam driver itself, maybe the configuration was affected by other updates.

@teresa – Did you check the webcam setup in Skype and select the right input device? In any case, try using a different program to test your webcam (like Splitcam or Manycam). If it works there it should also work in Skype.

@matthew – All cases I have ever seen this problem being reported it was related to the webcam driver. Did you try reinstalling that?

@Adrian – The Ipevo Pov webcam driver is supposed to be compatible with XP, Vista and Windows 7, so that should not cause the problem. It might be a different device that is unknown, and not the webcam. Did you check for other device drivers?
The Ipevo FAQ list for the POV webcam is indeed not very helpful :(
But what do you mean by “it would not reboot”? So how do you get it to boot in the end?

  4. Adrian says:

ps I dont have any other webcam software that could be in conflict.

  5. Adrian says:

I have read all the advice and have folowed the instructions.I have an IPEVO POV webcam that Ibought a year ago and installed it, then to discover that at frequent intervals, it would not reboot after I shut down the PC.So Ive been regularly reinstalling the manufacturers driver software from the Fujitsu website for my Amilo L7320.But is seems that my XP isnt recognising the driver in Hardware and is telling me the Driver is unknown.
So there is a basic driver software issue here which is beyond my technical knowledge of these things!Do you have any insights on this and is this a problem well known for the POV webcam, as I have heard on google chat sites that they are regarded as rubbish!!!
    Many thanks.

hi i have been trying to get my web camera to work its a build in web camera and for some reason its not showing my face its showing apicture of flowers im trying to use it for skype

  8. Megan says:

Well my webcam is built in to my laptop and i have windows vista(basic) i try to send webcam requests for people to see me and it say’s there is no webcam installed, when it obviously is, it used to work then suddenly just stopped, also when i go in to computer-webcam it just comes up saying “there isn’t a image to be displayed” any suggestions on how to fix it ? Many thanks :)

  9. Kyle says:

@Janelle – Have you checked if the default recording device is set to the webcam device correctly? If your computer has multiple capture devices, like a TV card or something, that could be the default device.
What webcam and program are you using?

@Alex – Did you by any chance install the latest MSN version? Because that has been changed, and the webcam functionality is severely limited now. It sounds like that is the problem.

  10. Alex says:

hi. i have a toshiba laptop and my cam is built in. on msn it says i have a cam, but won’t let me go on cam just on video call. it was working fine until my laptop wiped.. can someone help?

  11. Janelle says:

I don’t know what’s the problem of my webcam, but whenever I opened it something pops up saying, “Could not initialize capture device” that. After that, there’s no picture. I can’t take a picture. So that’s why until now we can’t use the webcam.

  12. Kyle says:

@Orlando – Going back to the original drivers is always a good idea, as it will bring back the configuration to a situation where it was working. Hibernation won’t affect the drivers btw. If at all, hibernation can affect the devices with drivers that do not implement power control properly, but just try reinstalling the original drivers for the webcam.

@Ravi – If you do not know the webcam brand and model, you can use a driver finder program as recommended in the article.

  13. Ravi says:

Hi how can i find drivers for my web cam as the manufacturer of the web cam is not there

  14. Orlando says:

    Hey, Kyle, back again.

My apologies for replying late, I wanted to wait awhile to see if my girlfriend’s computer would improve, but she is still having some issues with her webcam.

So far she’s been doing a system restore, because after a day or two, if she goes to use it over AIM the webcam will turn either white or black and the light will not go on. The driver still won’t show up in Device Manager, even under “Other Devices” like you suggested. That only happens if the webcam isn’t working, strangely.

I asked her if she updated her driver yet on HP’s support site, and she said no, but she said the last time her driver was updated was back in 2007 (which I’m assuming is the driver that came with the computer), her laptop is only two years old. Also, I don’t think I mentioned this previously, but she used to use Hibernation a lot when she would leave her computer idle for a long time…could that have affected the driver perhaps? I’ve heard Hibernation can screw up a system if used many times. She doesn’t use it anymore though.

Should my girlfriend try to reinstall her driver on HP’s site or do you suggest maybe something else?

    I appreciate the help, Kyle.

Thanx for hangin with me Kyle…turns out the webcam is color enabled but my poor lighting senario caused the poor effect…yes it is color.

Also, I was only using SKYPE but have now looked up your SplitCam which turns out to be free software that looks interesting….so thanx again!

  16. jamie says:

kyle i writing you this for to thank you for your time it is now fixed so once again thanks

  17. Kyle says:

@Brian – I meant to ask if the webcam image shows only in black in white in other programs as well. If it is only Skype, you need to look at that. If it also happens in SplitCam, Yahoo and MSN for example, it is a webcam driver or Windows problem.

  18. rosie says:

basically i have a dell inspiron and on msn its saying i have cam to me but not others if will not let me go on video call and when i do it is saying i dont have cam it works fine on normal cam’s but the other person has to send there cam first ,this is really weird.
    help me please?x

  19. Brian says:

I do appreciate your quick response and yes; I have already confirmed that I am using the original driver(s)which apparently are the most recent available as well.

So far as other programs that support webcams; I don’t understand your query as to the “all no color”.

I was hoping to find help that could direct me to a resolve but thanks for the attempt.

  20. Kyle says:

@Brian – I think there are very few webcams that do not support color these days. And if you have a new Toshiba laptop, the webcam should definitely support color.
In most cases where options are not available, in my experience they are driver related. Are you using the Toshiba original drivers?
And what about other programs that support webcams, all no color?

  21. Brian says:

I have two new Toshiba Satellite Laptops, different models but bith have the Chicony 2.0 built-in Web Cam

Anyway, i utilize SKYPE on both computers and have been making video calls but only see black & white imaging. When I access the “Video Capture Properties” panel, the check box to “Colorenable” can not be accessed. I have checked for any possible driver updates but found I have the latest.

If there is a box to enable color; doesn’t that mean I should be able to turn it on or, is this webcam simply not capable of color???????

  22. Kyle says:

@Evie – It could be a USB problem for the webcam device only as well. Does the problem happen an all USB ports?
And have you tried the webcam(s) on a different computer to make sure they still work?
In the USB article I listed, you could try the deletion of the registry key for the USB webcam (the for-last point in the list). That should make sure the device is recognized again when you plug it (so unplug it for you try this).

  23. Evie says:

@Kyle I think the ports are fine, as my iPod charger and camera cable still work fine.

  24. Kyle says:

@Evie / eskander – There could be a problem with the USB port configuration after plugging and unplugging USB devices from different ports repeatedly.
Did you have a look at our tips to solve unrecognized USB devices?
Those do also apply to usb webcams.

  25. eskander says:

    Hi kyle ,
    how are you ?
Actually i have a big annoying problem with my driverless cam !first time i bought it it was working out , i lent to a friend of mine and when i took it back it never worked and the pc never recognised it any more ,it says the usb device not recognised , so i don’t know how to figur it out and find the solution of it , which i hope to find it with you .
