How to Manually Put the Computer into Standby in MS Windows XP Professional
To manually put the computer into standby in MS Windows XP Professional:
- Go to the Windows Start menu, choose the Control Panel option, and then double-click Power Options.
- Choose the Advanced tab.
- Select the When I press the power button on my computer drop-down list and then choose the Standby option. Note: If you are using a portable computer, click Standby under When I close the lid of my portable computer.
- Click the OK button.
- Turn off the computer or close the lid of the portable computer.

Now your computer will not turn off when you press the power button, but go to standby mode instead. Starting Windows from standby will happen a lot faster then restarting Windows from a power off situation.
